While this seems gross (because it is) the science behind it was sound for the time because ammonia can act as a bleaching agent. So, while these methods were far from perfect, they laid the groundwork for future advancements in cosmetic dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Middle Ages and Renaissance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the Middle Ages, dental care was primitive, and cosmetic dentistry was virtually non-existent. It wasn\u2019t until the Renaissance that there was renewed interest in dental aesthetics. Pierre Fauchard, known as the \u201cfather of modern dentistry,\u201d made significant contributions to the field in the 18th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He introduced techniques for straightening teeth using wires and developed methods for replacing missing teeth with dentures made from ivory and human teeth. He then published all his findings in a manuscript that could be duplicated and distributed for others to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 19th<\/sup> Century to Modern Times<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There were several breakthroughs in the 19th century that changed the course of cosmetic dentistry for the better. One notable innovation was the development of porcelain teeth. In 1808, an Italian dentist named Giuseppangelo Fonzi created individual porcelain teeth that could be attached to a base. This offered a more natural appearance than previous materials for false teeth used in dentures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, cosmetic dentistry is more varied and accessible than ever before.
