Dental implants may be the best way to replace your lost teeth with gorgeous restorations that look, work, and feel just like the real thing, and they are placed through a painless surgical procedure. Many people report this minor surgery to be considerably less stressful than tooth extraction, and being prepared for the treatment can set you up for a complication-free recovery as well as several decades with a complete smile. Here’s a quick guide to how you can get ready for dental implant surgery.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

Dental implants are placed through a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is rendered completely painless with an appropriate anesthetic, and you may receive sedation if you need extra help remaining calm in the treatment chair. After the surgical area is sufficiently numb, the dentist will make a small incision in the gum tissue and insert a little titanium post into the jawbone. They will then close the incision around the new implant, and the patient will receive detailed aftercare instructions to help ensure a complication-free recovery.

How Can I Prepare for Dental Implant Surgery?

A few great ways to prepare for dental implant surgery include:

  • Practicing excellent daily oral hygiene: Brushing, flossing, and antibacterial mouthwash will prevent oral infections that can complicate the implant process.
  • Abstaining from tobacco use: Tobacco causes a host of oral health issues that make it hard for dental implants to integrate with the jawbone, so it’s best to quit smoking for at least two weeks before the procedure.
  • Eat a hearty breakfast: Eating may be difficult for several hours after surgery, so it may be a good idea to enjoy a satisfying meal a few hours before receiving implants. However, this may not be appropriate if you are scheduled for sedation.
  • Arrange a ride home: If you are receiving oral conscious sedation, you will need a trusted individual to drive you home and monitor you for several hours while you recover.
  • Clear your schedule: It’s important to avoid stress while recovering from surgery, so it’s probably best to rest for the remainder of the day. However, many implant patients are ready to resume their normal activities the next day.

After receiving implants, adhering to your dentist’s aftercare instructions will help you remain comfortable and avoid complications. Consulting with your oral health professional is the best way to understand how to prepare for implant surgery.
