Who Is a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening can be a great fit for almost anyone who is unhappy with the color of their teeth. It can address many types of stains, including extrinsic (on the surface of the enamel) and some types of intrinsic (inside the enamel) stains. During your consultation, our team will make sure that your teeth and gums are healthy enough for a cosmetic treatment before we move forward with helping you achieve your aesthetic goals.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening formulas often use either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as their active ingredient. These products penetrate the tooth enamel and break up pigment molecules. This process can dramatically whiten teeth in a short period of time!
In our office, we offer two types of teeth whitening treatments. The one that is best for you will depend on your circumstances and personal preferences.
Take-Home Teeth Whitening
Take-home teeth whitening involves the use of custom-made trays that are filled with a whitening solution. You simply use the trays as directed every day for about two weeks. You may notice a difference in your smile after just a few days, but be sure to complete the full course of treatment for optimum results.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
If you wish to achieve results as quickly as possible, in-office teeth whitening may be right for you. Our team will apply a powerful bleaching formula to your teeth, let it sit for a bit, and then rinse it off. We might repeat the process a few times. This type of teeth whitening usually takes just one hour or so.
Tips for Maintaining Your Brighter Smile
After your teeth whitening treatment, you can take these steps to help your results last as long as possible:
- Minimize your intake of highly pigmented foods and beverages. For the first 48 hours after in-office whitening, you should eat a “white diet” that consists of white or unpigmented foods, such as bananas, milk, etc.
- Maintain an excellent daily oral hygiene routine.
- Visit us every six months for a professional dental cleaning.
- Do not smoke or chew tobacco.
- Come to us for periodic whitening touch-ups.
